OVER-UNDER

Urban Design

Location: Ataba Square, Cairo. Egypt

An amphitheater and an automated bazar were designed to regenerate urban life and searching contemporary scene in old Cairo. Taking stair, one of architectural elements, as space for displaying, we looked to create a new experience of selling and shopping in Islamic bazar. An automated textile conveyor system, hybridized with structures of elevated highway and lighting system, was engaged to deliver goods. The synthetical systems begin to express themselves of how infrastructure can affect vendors and customers’ activities. Scattered vendor spots with colorful products come into being a unique urban scenery. Tessellation pattern was adopted in the amphitheater to blur the boundary between open public space and semi-open theater space. The transformation revealed by the reflection of tessellation pattern on contemporary glass architectural elements interprets fusion of real and fiction. Muqarnas, as particular Islamic architectural elements, were applied to the under-path of stairs. Creating hybridized urban elevation composed by the contemporary glass, reflection, and simplified muqarnas, we intended to explore intermediate architecture between modern and ancient.
